Apabila kita mendengar nama Port, maka yang langsung terlintas di pikiran kita pastinya merupakan sebuah socket khusus yang ditempatkan pada sebuah komputer yang berguna untuk menghubungkan kabel dan perangkat tertentu. Hal ini mungkin ada benarnya.
Tetapi pada dasarnya, port terbagi menjadi beberapa bentuk. Setidaknya ada dua jenis port yang dikenal pada sebuah terminology komputer. Kedua jenis port itu adalah port fisik dan juga port logic. Fungsi port dalam komputer pada umumnya menjadi suatu penghubung yang cukup memiliki peran penting.
Port fisik adalah port yang kita ketahui secara luas. Port fisik dapat dilihat dan kita rasakan secara fisik. Fungsi utama dari port fisik ini pun untuk melakukan penghubungan dua atau lebih komponen yang nyata secara fisik, misalnya menghubungkan antara komputer dengan server dengan kabel, ataupun perangkat lainnya.
Port logic. berbeda dengan port fisik, port logic merupakan jenis port yang tidak dapat terlihat secara fisik, dan tidak dapat kita pegang atau raba. Tetapi port logic ini juga memiliki fungsi yang sama untuk saling menghubungkan antar perangkat melalui protocol ataupun melalui media lainnya.
Port yang Digunakan pada Jaringan Komputer
Pada sebuah jaringan komputer, baik port fisik maupun port logic, keduanya merupakan jenis port yang digunakan secara bersamaan. Fungsi dari kedua port ini saling berhubungan. Dimana apabila tidak ada salah satu port, maka hubungan dari sebuah jaringan tidak akan dapat terbangun.

Port yang merupakan salah satu perangkat untuk mengakses internet menjadi salah satu hardware jaringan yang wajib ada. Akan tetapi, ada bebrapa port logic yang paling umum digunakan pada jaringan internet, baik untuk menghubungkan protocol ataupun untuk melakukan sitem sharing dan fungsi lainnya.
